[...] Hentai (変態 or へんたい, Hentai?) is a Japanese word that means “abnormality” or “metamorphosis”. However, in colloquial situations it often means “perverted” and is subsequently used in many other countries to refer to anime, manga, and computer games with explicit sexual or pornographic content (see Japanese pornography). The word is never used this way in Japanese; commonly used terms include “jū hachi kin” (18禁; prohibited for sale to persons under 18), “ecchi/H anime” (sexual/pornographic anime) “eroanime” (エロアニメ; derived from erotic anime), or “seinen” (成年; adult, not to be confused with 青年 young adult).
[...] Some movies are like events that happen on the socio-cultural landscape. They “go off” and you can observe through time their effect as ripples of influence and effect. I am in the middle of watching a very depressing documentary about the excellence of the labor force that is being developed in India. To quote my wife: “Man, we don’t have shit to offer the world…” Beg to differ, my love. Witness Damian, an operations manager at Office Tiger (one of India’s foremost outsourced US labor companies), age 27. When asked to explain what it’s like at Office Tiger, he pauses a moment to reflect and says in a thick Hindi drawl “It’s like when Laurence Fishburne says to Keanu Reeves in the Matrix… ‘I cannot tell you what the Matrix is. You have to experience the Matrix for yourself’ ” The Matrix is everything we don’t yet understand. Wherever there is the possibility of duality… “Is it day or night? Black or white? Alive or dead? The past or the future? Am I awake or asleep? Is this heaven or hell? Real or unreal?”… the Matrix gives us a universal metaphor with which to consider our fate as souls. The Roman Empire may be in a precipitous decline, but we are still the most important authors of content in the world. Damian wants to be Keanu Reeves, and so long as that is true, America’s (California’s) power should not be entirely discounted. Our only real competitor for the airwaves is Japan.
[...] It’s tough to pre-judge an anime show based on the names and companies listed in the credits. The larger anime outfits, after all, are kind of like Hollywood studios—they can be working on half a dozen shows at once, so just because they put out one series you like doesn’t automatically mean you’ll think their entire opus of work is brilliant. Still, when the first info on Ergo Proxy came out late last year, you couldn’t help but be at least a little excited. A new show co-produced by manglobe, the team behind Samurai Champloo? A scriptwriting team headed by Dai Sato, one of the big names behind Eureka Seven and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex? How can you go wrong with this lineup? The answer, after watching the first four episodes: You totally, totally can’t — see the ergo proxy trailer — ergo proxy wallpaper [...]

[...] “Have you ever noticed that Anime characters have a certain (weird) sort of look? What’s funny is that the look is not really Japanese. I mean Anime characters look more Japanese than say, for example, Anna Nicole Smith. But they don’t really look like people from Japan…” The above image is representative of a form of Anime called Ecchi, which is described as sexy but not sexual. No wonder Britney looks a little miffed. [...]
