Anime is Weird
Anime is weird, and that weirdness is rooted in the overall weirdness of Japan. It’s a strange place. Like all islands, its inhabitants are possessed of strange customs and practices. Japan, like England (another island nation), has developed an elaborate manners system… lots of arbitrary, silly little rules, that just make outsiders stick out as much as possible. I guess living with so many rules has its side-effects. Japan is, as far as I know, the only place in the world where overwork is a leading cause of death. The call it karoshi Sheesh! All of this strangled personal expression, that is so characteristic of the Japanese, does find occasional outlet in some pretty cool shit. Anime is cool shit from Japan, yo — kimono.

The past or the future? Am I awake or asleep? Is this heaven or hell? Real or unreal?”… the Matrix gives us a universal metaphor with which to consider our fate as souls. The Roman Empire may be in a precipitous decline, but we are still the most important authors of content in the world. Damian wants to be Keanu Reeves, and so long as that is true, America’s (California’s) power should not be entirely discounted. Our only real competitor for the airwaves is Japan. […]
